1. There are three key players mentioned in the article. The first key player is the World Trade Organization which is mentioned in paragraph 4, “World Trade Organization, and by extension globalization, also stands accused of destroying the global environment”. The second key player is China, as can be deduced from “China's blazing economic growth…pollute not only China's air and water but the world’s environment as well” in paragraph 8. The third key player is United States, as stated in paragraph 15, “The world's top emitter of greenhouse gases, the United States”.
2. Some effects of globalization on the environment includes “increased fishing, destruction of forestland, and the spread of polluting industries to the developing world” (para 4) and “more logging worldwide” (para 6).
3. It is an example that showed the pro and con of globalization. For example, the advantage is that “supplying cheap products to the world”, while the disadvantage is that “pollute not only China's air and water but the world’s environment as well”. (para8)
4. The answer cannot be found in the article. However, some insights into some of the reasons can be found in the link here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/1248757.stm . One possible reason might be that “it would lead to higher energy prices in the United States” which is stated in paragraph 7 of the article from the link.
Thank you for the questions and please correct me if there is any mistakes in my answers! :)
Main idea of “The Double Edge of Globalization”
Even though globalization has brought about numerous positive effects and made the world much more accessible, in its process of doing so, had created numerous detrimental effects that harm the environment greatly.
